The E3 East building, the new headquarters of Coima, is located in Piazza Gae Aulenti in Milan. The project, which includes 4 floors above ground of executive offices and a retail area on the ground floor, is by Arch. Mario Cucinella. The building is rigidly connected to the existing structure of three underground floors, the “Podio”, entirely made of reinforced concrete.
The side of the building facing Via Melchiorre Gioia is characterised by a significant structural setback at ground floor level, linked to the architectural choice of misaligning the entrance to the building with respect to the main line of the facade.
The structural design was therefore complex, both from a static point of view and for the need to control the deformation field. The external cladding of the building, on the north and south fronts, is made with laminated wood arches as high as the building and positioned at variable distances. The progressive inclination in plan creates a divergent geometry with respect to the facade line with an effect of suggestive “sails”.
